Right-wing Twitter is commenting on the Titanic-exploring submersible disaster story because of course it is, but the more interesting commentary on the story comes from normies. There’s a good video explaining the whole story here if you need to catch up:
The reaction from many normies upon learning about this disaster is to mock the very idea that one would put one’s life at risk purely for the sake of adventure. The CEO of OceanGate is being mocked by the right for his comments about not hiring fifty-year old white guys, and by normies for using game controllers for his submarine controls.
The general rule with human-machine interfaces is that you want to design them to be as simple as possible. This sort of interface is actually used in the U.S. military as well; there’s really nothing wrong with it.
But of course, whenever modern people, millennials and younger especially, encounter something serious, especially something that challenges their concepts of hedonistic self-preservation, they must find a way to mock the events and destroy any aspects of heroism in it.
This meme is the only one that really captures the story:
The needle is on the cusp of “retarded,” but indeed the people on the submarine were actually Faustian. Although the CEO’s comments about old white men were cringe, no one commenting on the story really knows whether or not this was the cause of the disaster, and regardless, the CEO had the balls to drive his submarine himself. There were certainly many questionable decisions in the events leading up to the disaster, but ultimately the CEO and his tourists were exemplars of the spirit of western civilization, which is that of explorers and pioneers. To mock this spirit is to mock the idea potential of your very own soul.
If you laugh, you ain't white.
